Enjoy the Light

With the onset of a new year, we establish new goals, create new memories, and foster new hopes. Sometimes it is tempting to constantly look ahead and wonder what our lives will hold or even to worry about those future events. However, I think it is crucial to also look behind us, not in a sense of mournful nostalgia for things we’ve left behind, but in order to document God’s grace, the ways in which He has proved faithful time after time. One such time of grace for me occurred last October.
I was driving back to Columbia alone on a Saturday night after visiting Clemson University. A short while into the drive, my eyelids became heavier and heavier. I fought the fatigue most of the way home. But near the end of the trip, I fell asleep while driving on the interstate. I woke up as the car left the right shoulder of the road and hit the grass. The jolt made my eyes fly open and my heart pound. Fear gripped me, and I turned the steering wheel hard to the left, attempting to get back on the road. As a result, I overcompensated, causing my car to skid on the pavement.
